The gastronomic highlights for the weekend will be Savoyard specialties including tartiflette and fondue. Cross-country skiing and snow shoeing are also available. However students will need to discuss these activities with the on-site program director in advance.

ONE-DAY TRIPS

Annecy
Annecy, with its canal-laced medieval quarter, has been called the "Alpine Venice". In the Fall EUS students will witness the annual celebration, the "retour des alpages", a farming event wherein the cattle that have been breeding in the mountains over the summer are brought back into the valley. Students will enjoy the unforgettable experience of strolling through Annecy's narrow streets, along the canals and across the vibrantly flowered bridges. In the summer there is Annecy's "Fete du Lac" as well as water sports such as paragliding and paddleboats on the lake. The Chateau d'Annecy and the Palais de l'Isle are some of the beautiful sites around Annecy.

La Cote Saint AndrE
This day trip will take students to La Cote Saint André, home to music composer Hector Berlioz. North-west and 30 minutes from Grenoble, This trip includes round trip transportation, a visit to the local chocolate factory, a presentation - by chocolate expert Pierre Jouvenal - on the making of chocolate and subsequent tasting, then lunch in a nearby restaurant to experience the local cuisine. After enjoying some leisure time in the village, participants will finish the day by visiting a local vineyard where there will be a wine tasting.

Vizille
Just fifteen kilometres south of Grenoble, Vizille makes a great destination for a day trip either as a group or for exploration on your own as there is regular bus service to Vizille and back. The castle at Vizille, which boasts an outstanding garden, is an architectural landmark that plays host to a museum dedicated to the events of the French Revolution. Indeed, leaders of the French Revolution held their major meetings in Vizille shortly before taking to the streets of Paris in 1889. Furthermore Vizille is a landmark on Napoleon's path - the Emperor stopped over here on his way to Paris from Elba Island.

Grenoble is excellently positioned for travel not only throughout France but in other countries as well. The T.G.V, France's internationally renowned high-speed train, makes trips to Paris and northern France easy and comfortable. Moreover Grenoble has its own airport, making flight travel to any destination in Europe quick and simple. In the past, students have enjoyed weekends in the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Prague, Vienna, Salsburg, Rome, Florence and Munich, just to mention a few. Apart from EU StudyAbroad sponsored excursions, most of the destinations listed above make ideal places for independent travel.
