Housing
When studying abroad quality housing is the first
step toward a meaningful experience, hence our effort to provide EUStudyAbroad
students with the best housing options possible. We do request that participants
send in their housing preferences at least six weeks before their program
start date so as to assure that students will receive their desired option.
Apartments with French Students
Life with a French student is the best way to get to know modern French
language and culture while interacting with other French students. We
do our best to match EUStudyAbroad students with French students based
upon age, fields of interest, and common hobbies such as sports. There
is the possibility of being housed with a minimum of one and a maximum
of three French students. In a similar manner it is possible for two EUStudyAbroad students to share housing along with one or two French students.
The confirmation deadline for this option is three months prior to the
program start date. After that date this option is available on a first
come, first serve basis. The apartments are located in the downtown Grenoble
area or fairly close to it. A key will be made available and there is
no curfew. Please note that this housing option carries an exceptional applicatin deadline of 3 months before the program start date.
Homestay with a French Family
One of the best ways to become familiar with the everyday French way of
life and to obtain a greater understanding of French culture is to stay
with one of our carefully selected host families. These families are considerate
and caring and all share the same passion of introducing American students
to French culture, tradition, and way of life. In most cases there will
only be one student per host family. However, depending on availability,
two students may be hosted together in the same family. Students may also
request to be hosted in a family with another American student but this
is not always possible. Each student will have a private bedroom, full
access to a bathroom, and limited access to the kitchen. A key will also
be made available to the student so he/she may come and go at will, although
we do request that the student let the family know of his/her whereabouts.
There is no curfew.
MEALS
Students who are housed with French families will receive daily breakfast included in the cost of the program. Students are also obliged to pay their family a total sum of 200 Euro per month for meals provided. Though not compulsory to attend, it is highly recommended that students eat meals with the family, as the experience and value of speaking at listening at the dinner table is priceless in itself. For those students housed in dormitories and apartments, EU StudyAbroad includes a meal plan of 15 meal tickets per month for students. These tickets can be used at university restaurants on campus called Resto U.
A few of these restaurants can also be found in town but most are located
on campus. Without a ticket, Resto U serves three-course meals for the
price of three dollars. Dormitory students will have to budget funds for
additional meals ($ 400/month at least). EUStudyAbroad will make arrangements
for students living in dorms to share a meal with a French family two
or three times a week at the additional cost of seven dollars per meal.
Additionally there are many grocery and food stores located in and around
Grenoble. For fresh produce, bread, and cheese, there are the Marché
des Halles and the Place aux Herbes outdoor markets in downtown Grenoble.
Further details on these markets will be made available onsite by the
EUStudyAbroad staff.
